One sunny August afternoon my wife and I were traveling down the interstate in Eastern Iowa. Suddenly, a butterfly darted out in front of the car and tragically met its demise when it collided with the hood of the car. Normally I would not have given it a second thought but I was listening to the late Roy Orbison which put me in a mellow mood and I unexpectedly had feelings for the carefree winged insect.
I thought to myself, "It is highly likely that each day millions of butterflies reach untimely deaths, haphazardly darting in front of every type of vehicle; not unlike birds, cats, dogs, deer and countless other creatures. However, butterflies colliding with vehicles do not pose an immediate hazard to the humans or their vehicles; therefore, the tragedy is overlooked and their deaths go unnoticed and unreported. If only there were crosswalks for butterflies, how many fluttering lives could be saved?".
